Messages from Manor

Dear Parents and Carers

It takes a village to raise a child. This is a saying that many of you will have heard before. Clearly, the most important role in raising a child is that of parents, but only the most superhuman parents can raise a child with no other external support. Wider family and friends play a huge part in supporting and influencing a child. School is clearly important in developing and educating a child, with the staff and other pupils helping them form their understanding, views and opinions.

There are also members of the wider community who play their part, from emergency services to shop workers; anyone who interacts with children will leave an impression about how to behave in our community.

At Manor, we are lucky enough to be situated in an actual village that, for the most part, cherishes the small school that sits at its heart. Many of our volunteers are from the village and surrounding areas, and they bring great values and enrichment to the children's education. It is less common for those who are not related to children at the school to contribute but this week we have had a lovely example of just that.

On Mrs Turner's walk home along Peel Close she is often stopped by Les and Janet for a chat. They have heard about our gardening and have then donated pots and plants from their own garden, such as cuttings and beans and herbs. Hopefully, they will get to read this and realise that they are an important part of the 'village raising our children', setting an example of selfless kindness. Thank you, Les and Janet!

Water Safety Assembly Reminder

Following recent water-related incidents across the UK during the half-term break, we held a whole school assembly this week to talk about the importance of staying safe in and around water.

During the assembly, children learned about some of the hidden dangers of open water, including cold water shock, strong currents and unseen hazards beneath the surface. We also discussed how to make safe choices, such as staying with a trusted adult and only swimming in supervised areas.

As we move into the warmer summer months, we kindly ask parents and carers to continue these conversations at home. Reminding children about water safety, even if they are confident swimmers, is extremely important. Many incidents happen quickly and can often be prevented with the right knowledge and guidance.

Thank you for your support in helping to keep our children safe.

Sport

We had a sporty last week before half-term with the wonderful SportFest, the key ingredient of which seemed to be the enthusiasm that children had for throwing wet sponges at their oldest teachers... Mr Forman and Mr Robson! Maybe we can suggest a change of target next year (are you reading this, Mr Culff, Mr Lloyd and of course, Mrs Armstrong?).

We also sent a team to the B Team football tournament at Coton Green. Schools were asked not to choose their usual 'first team' players, so we thought the fairest way of choosing was out of the hat on this occasion. The team, supported by Mr Culff and his parents, were unbeaten. Despite this being a less competitive event with an emphasis on enjoying the beautiful game, we did actually win the tournament! Far more importantly though, the team were brilliantly behaved and had lots of fun. Well done to all.

Drayton Bassett Parish Council Logo Design Competition

Drayton Bassett Parish Council is launching a community-wide competition inviting local school children to design a new logo (crest) for the parish council. This is an exciting opportunity for young people to help shape the visual identity of Drayton Bassett while learning about its rich history, heritage, and community values.

The winning design will be used as the basis for the official logo of Drayton Bassett Parish Council and used on publications, signage, and digital platforms.

The competition aims to:

  • Create a distinctive and meaningful visual identity for Drayton Bassett Parish Council
  • Encourage creativity and artistic expression among local young people
  •  Promote awareness and appreciation of the parish’s history, landmarks, and environment
  •  Foster a sense of community pride and belonging

The competition is open to children attending local primary schools within or near Drayton Bassett, or children living in the parish of school age (primary and secondary school).

Participants are invited to create a logo that represents Drayton Bassett. Designs should reflect the parish’s identity and may draw inspiration from:

Local History & Heritage

  • The parish’s longstanding rural history
  • Historic buildings and landmarks (e.g. St Peter’s Church)
  • Agricultural traditions and countryside heritage
  • The “Bassett” family connection reflected in the village name

Environment & Landscape

  • Local fields, farmland, and natural surroundings
  • Canals, waterways, or nearby features
  • Wildlife and nature found in the area

Community & Culture

  • Village life and sense of community
  • Local events or traditions
  • The parish’s character as a close-knit rural community

Entries will be judged based on:

  • Creativity and originality
  • Relevance to Drayton Bassett’s identity and history
  • Visual impact and clarity
  • Suitability for use as an official logo

Designs should be original and created by the entrant and artwork may be hand-drawn or digitally produced.

Designs must be suitable for reproduction in colour and black & white, as well as be simple, clear, and easily recognisable at different sizes

Designs must not include copyrighted images, logos, or trademarks, and designs don’t need to be perfect as the winning design will go to a graphic designer to be recreated in high resolution.

Each entry should include:

  • The completed logo design
  • The entrant’s name, age, and school
  • A short description (no more than 50 words) explaining the design and its inspiration

Submission formats:

  • Paper entries (A4 size recommended)
  • Digital entries (JPEG or PNG format)

Entries can be submitted via school or directly to the Parish Council by the stated deadline.

The competition starts on 1st June 2026 and the submission deadline is 31st July 2026. The winner will be announced in September 2026.

Prize & Recognition

  • The winning entrant will receive a certificate and a £300 donation to their school PTA.
  • The winning design will become the official Parish Council logo (with any adjustments as required for reproduction)
  • Runners-up may also receive certificates or commendations
  • Selected entries may be displayed in the village

Terms & Conditions

  • By entering, participants agree that their design may be used, adapted, and reproduced by Drayton Bassett Parish Council
  • The Parish Council reserves the right to make minor modifications to the winning design for professional use
  • Entries must be submitted before the deadline to be considered
  • The judges’ decision is final
