Dear Parents and Carers

Now the days are getting longer, the dew has mostly dried off the field by the time school starts, so we will be looking to move morning drop off from the playground to the field from the first day back next week (Tuesday). Many of you know the routine from previous years, but this will be a change for EYFS and any newer children.

In the morning the gate down the drive past the school office will be open. The lunchbox trolley will be brought out to the front of school and parents and children can come down to the field once a member of staff (usually Mr Robson) is out on duty from 8:40am.

There will be a track set out using markers, around the field and all children and adults are encouraged to walk/jog/run/hop/skip around the field with their friends to get a few steps in before school starts. Each lap the children do, they can take a coloured 'house point' counter from a bowl and add it to their house total. These will be set up on the tables under the trees. If adults want to take a counter for their child's house for each lap they do, that is fine too.

Please can we ask that the balance trail equipment is not used during this morning session, including the tyres, as we are not able to supervise this. Children should stay on the marked out track in the centre of the field and not play behind trees, the outdoor classroom (known as 'the nest') or with any of the play equipment that they have access to at playtimes under staff supervision.

When the bell goes at 8:50am, children will line up at the top of the field where they do at the end of playtimes currently and staff will lead them in. EYFS children will do the same as the rest of the school, so they will not go in on arrival but will line up at 8:50 and be led round to class by staff. Please could EYFS parents say goodbyes on the field and not follow children round to the classroom wherever possible.

Of course, in wet weather we will revert to the present system on the playground.

Green Fingered Volunteers...

When you do drop off on the field, do take the time to look at the 'Peace Garden' area that has been developed beside the car park over the last year. This area has been transformed by a small army of amazing volunteers who have regularly turned up at school with plants from their own gardens, grow bags and plants they have bought themselves and their expertise, patience and hard work. All classes have had an opportunity to plant some vegetables or fruits (tomatoes?) and are excited to be able to harvest them and sample them over the summer. In fact they may be able to supply salad and vegetables for the kitchen for part of the year! A huge thank you to June Hemus, Caroline Kibble, Jenny Turner, and Melanie Malpas for their work on what has become a beautiful part of school.

Building a Love of Reading – One Page at a Time

At school, we are passionate about developing a love of reading and supporting children to become confident, enthusiastic readers. Reading for pleasure plays a vital role in children’s progress – helping to build vocabulary, comprehension, imagination and a lifelong enjoyment of books. It is well documented that children who choose to read do well at school.

Recent monitoring of reading records across both KS1 and KS2 has shown that many children are reading at home regularly, which is fantastic to see. However, we have noticed that reading record books are not always being completed or signed by parents and carers when children read at home or are read to.

Reading Records – A Quick Reminder

Please remember to sign and complete your child’s reading record every time they read or are read to at home, even if it is just for a few minutes. These records help teachers to:

  • Track how often children are reading
  • Monitor progress and confidence
  • Provide appropriate support and guidance

Most importantly, they allow us to celebrate your child’s efforts and successes in reading.

How You Can Support at Home 💬

We kindly ask for your continued support by:

  • Encouraging your child to read regularly
  • Reading with or to your child whenever possible
  • Ensuring reading records are completed and signed every time your child reads

Together, we can continue to build a strong reading culture and help every child develop a genuine love of books.

Thank you for your ongoing support; we look forward to seeing reading records completed and reading enthusiasm continuing to flourish across school!

Exciting New Reading Rewards! 🎉

To further encourage reading at home, we are excited to introduce a brand‑new reading reward system, starting next week.

  • Every 4 recorded reads will earn your child 1 raffle ticket
  • Every 2 weeks, we will draw 2 winning tickets per class

🎁 Prizes will include:

  • Brand‑new books
  • Book vouchers
  • Bookmarks
  • Reading with Mr Robson and a hot chocolate
  • Opportunities to read to younger children

This initiative is designed to motivate children, celebrate regular reading and make reading at home even more exciting.

KS2 CREST Science Award – Coming Home Soon!

Children will soon be bringing home information about the CREST SuperStar Science Award, a national award that encourages curiosity, investigation and fun hands‑on science. Pupils will be invited to complete a small number of practical science activities at home and record what they discover. Keep an eye out for the letter and CREST passport – we’d love as many children as possible to give it a go

Paired Reading Across School

Last week, we enjoyed a wonderful paired reading session, where KS2 pupils visited KS1 and EYFS classrooms to read to our younger children. It was a lovely half an hour, with every child in school fully immersed in reading for pleasure.

The younger children loved listening to stories, and our older pupils showed fantastic responsibility, enthusiasm and care as reading role models. Due to the success of this session, we are delighted to confirm that paired reading will now take place every two weeks.

Thank You to the PTA

We would also like to say a huge thank you to the PTA for their generous support in purchasing newspapers and magazines for our older children. Through recent pupil voice, children told us they would like more access to magazines and non‑fiction texts.

As a result, we now have copies of First News and National Geographic Kids available in school. These engaging resources support reading for pleasure, widen vocabulary and encourage curiosity about the world.

Parent Forum

Thank you to those parents who were able to make our parent forum meeting last week with Mrs Armstrong. Some interesting ideas and constructive discussions were shared.

Help Us Make a Splash! Calling All Water Wall Helpers

As the weather starts to get warmer, our Robins team are excited to offer more outdoor learning opportunities for the children. One activity we would love to introduce is a water wall, which would allow the children to explore water play in a fun, hands‑on way.

Water play is a fantastic learning experience for young children. It helps them to develop:

  • Fine motor skills through pouring, scooping and controlling water flow
  • Problem‑solving and critical thinking as they experiment with what happens when water moves through different pipes and channels
  • Communication and language skills as they talk about what they observe and work together
  • Early scientific understanding, including cause and effect
  • Creativity and teamwork through collaborative play

We are hoping to find someone who could help us build a simple water wall for our EYFS outdoor area. We are able to provide pallets and some drain guttering, but we would be very grateful for help with the construction.

In addition, we are kindly asking if anyone is able to donate any of the following items:

  • Plumbing pipes or tubes
  • Connectors and clips to attach pipes and guttering
  • Funnels or similar water‑safe items

These do not need to be new – clean, safe, unwanted items would be perfect.

An example of a water wall:

If you think you could help in any way, whether by building the water wall or donating materials, please get in touch with Mrs Armstrong. Your support would make a wonderful difference to our children’s learning and enjoyment.

Thank you for your continued support! 😊

Car Parking

Outside any school at drop off and pick up times, there is always a rush of traffic and congestion. We are very grateful that so many of our parents are so considerate and give our school a good name by thinking of safety and local residents when parking around school.

Unfortunately, we have had regular complaints over the last week or so that Mrs Everett has had to deal with, about parents parking outside the church and blocking access to the houses along New Row opposite school. This has meant some residents not being able to get their cars through their right of way to access their properties or to get out in their cars to attend a medical appointment. Please could we ask that all parents are careful not to block this access at any time.

We have also had some parents who have stopped on the double yellow lines opposite school or the zigzags beside school. This makes safe crossing for children and parents with push chairs very dangerous, and it also means vehicles can't get past the parked cars as easily.

Please make sure that you always park safely and considerately as a priority. Leaving enough time to park a short walk from school if needed is important, but we would always rather you were a minute late than risking your child's or other's safety. Thank you for your support in this, as always.

Netball

Well done to our girls' netball team who competed in the small schools netball tournament this week. They played really well and came a close second winning two of their four games. Thank you to Mr Culff and Ms Newlyn for taking them and Mrs Sheridan for training them.
