Messages from Manor

Dear Parents and Carers

It is hard to believe we are already seeing early signs of Christmas in school when we are still at the start of November! We do avoid it (and the accompanying excitement) for as long as possible, so children can focus on their learning, but there are only a limited number of singing assemblies left for them to learn Carols; time left for them to learn their parts in nativities; and plans for festive PTFA fairs and film nights are necessarily advanced.

In the meantime, there are lots of other things happening in school. Before half term, we had a lovely Harvest Festival in the church with a packed audience. Thank you for your support in the collection made for the foodbank and to the volunteers who kindly delivered the food for us. The rousing rendition of Big Red Combine Harvester was a great way to end the half-term!

We said a fond farewell to our lovely cook, Jayne Green, who had been with us for several years. The process of recruitment is ongoing while Laura Carr, the Fierté Trust catering manager is covering. I suspect she likes working at Manor and feeding your children so much that she may be taking her time with the recruitment process! It is certainly great to have Laura at Manor, however short that time may be.

Another bit of staffing news is that we have appointed Lisa Newson to be a Teaching Assistant for two days per week. It may come as a surprise to some of you that Mrs Newson was not a TA already! She has been working in school voluntarily on a regular basis for some time now and doing a brilliant job. She will carry on with some of that voluntary work on a Tuesday and Wednesday but is now working full-time on a Thursday and Friday, for which we are actually paying her! I know you will join us in welcoming her to the Manor team (again!).

I was hoping to be able to bring you a match report for our Y5/6 girls' football this week, but unfortunately, the event was cancelled at the last minute by the venue due to health and safety concerns with their roof. The rearranged tournament is for next Thursday when Penguins are out on their visit to Oswestry Sculpture Park for the day. Understandably, there was some disappointment and tears among our lionesses until we put together the new goals we had bought and got them playing football at lunchtime. The future Lucy Bronze, Chloe Kelly or Leah Williamsons ended up with flushed faces and big grins from playing the beautiful game.

We are still open for nominations for our two parent governor vacancies.

The role of governor entails attending at least 6 meetings in the year, one each half term. There are papers to read before the meetings such as school policies, reports about school data and statistics, improvement plans etc. During the meetings governors challenge school leaders through raising questions and helping to steer the strategic direction of the school. Governors also need to be available to form any other committees when the need arises and they may need to attend governor visit days once or twice a year.

The role is vital to support the school and its leaders to deliver the best education for our children. If you feel you are able to contribute in this role at the heart of the school community, please do speak to Mr Robson for any further details. There are nomination forms that can be completed at the school office.

Book Fair

📚 The Scholastic Book Fair is Coming to Manor Primary Academy! 🎉

We’re excited to announce that the Scholastic Book Fair will be open during the week commencing Monday 1st December! The fair will be held after school in the school hall, and it’s a fantastic opportunity to pick up some brilliant books for your children - just in time for Christmas!

Not only is this a great way to encourage a love of reading at home, but every purchase also helps us raise funds to buy new books for our class libraries. It’s a win-win for everyone!

🎁 Looking for early Christmas presents? The book fair can also be opened earlier in the day on request for parents who’d like to browse and buy in a quieter setting.

Thank you for supporting our school and helping us grow our love of reading!

A Message From Your PTFA...

Thank you for all the support over the last few weeks. From the events before half term including the Halloween disco and the sale of items in the church, we made a profit of £430.16 and the Bonfire treats went down very well this week making a profit of £100.10. We would like to offer a big thank you to Mrs and Mr Berekis for the decorations at the Halloween disco which looked fabulous and were donated and erected by them. THANK YOU.

We have a couple of events coming up between now and Christmas. The Winter Movie night will take place on 20th November with a choice of The Twits (2025) and Mr Poppers Penguins. Bookings are now live at PTA Events and the cost will include a hot dog and snacks. Bookings can be made at the following link.  https://www.pta-events.co.uk/manorprimaryptfa/

We are also planning on running the Christmas Fayre on 4th December. We have already had a number of people volunteer to help out, either before or on the night, thank you to those people, if anyone else would like to get involved, please let Mrs Everett know and she can pass on names.

Please keep an eye out for any other events that may pop up over the coming weeks.

Anti Bullying Week - Odd Socks Day

We are all different and unique in our own way. At Manor, we teach children to be open-minded and to accept and tolerate different views and beliefs and to celebrate our differences. Too often bullying can be rooted in picking on differences through lack of understanding or fear of the unknown.

On Monday 10th November it is Odd Socks Day which is a fun way of celebrating and accepting that we are all a bit odd or different in some way and that is something that enriches our lives. The idea is simple; come to school wearing odd socks. These can be different colours or patterns, one football sock and one ankle sock, one trouser leg tucked into a sock and one not... it's up to you!

In school children will do some work linked to anti-bullying and there will be a whole school assembly on this theme. Of course Robins and Ducklings are taking part too and have this theme for the whole week. This is a message from Mrs Armstrong:

"Next week is Anti-Bullying Week and Odd Socks Day on Monday! As part of our kindness theme, Robins class will be doing some sock crafts in class. If you have any odd children’s socks (pairs or singles) that you no longer need, please send them to school.

Thank you so much for your support,
Mrs A"

Reception 2026

There has been a steady stream of parents looking round with a view to applying for a Reception place next year which is healthy for our school. Thank you to those of you who have recommended us to friends and family. A number of those looking have mentioned that current families have suggested Manor to them. It's not too late if you know anyone else to send our way!

Owls Tree Planting

We have today received several boxes from the Woodland Trust containing over 100 tree saplings ready to be planted. With the kind permission of the Hemus family we intend to take Owls class over on Thursday 13th next week to plant them in Edden's Wood where we do Forest School. We have a range of native species including oak, silver birch, holly, hawthorn, blackthorn, cherry, field maple etc.

Owls will need to bring wellies and a coat. If anyone would like to join us then please let Mr Forman know, especially if you can bring a spade!

Parent Forum

The parent forum at Manor has always been a really positive contributor to school/parent and carer communication. It is an opportunity for parents to have a chat about school issues over a coffee with a teacher attending to help contribute to the discussion. Any unanswered questions or suggestions can then be addressed in a subsequent Newsletter or similar.

Unfortunately, what had been termly meetings, fell away last year due to the busy lives of the key members. We are now trying to reinstate the forum with the current chair, Joanne Rooke, setting a date for next Friday 14th November at 9-10am in the school hall.

Items for discussion should be sent in advance of the meeting, either directly to Mrs Rooke or via the school office. This allows the teacher attending to find and provide answers where needed.

The forum have always been very good at being constructive and solution focused. They always avoid any criticism of individuals. As ever, any such complaints should follow the usual channels i.e. speaking to a class teacher or the headteacher.

So, if you fancy an informal chat about school over a brew (we may even dig out some biscuits!) then just drop in. All are welcome.

Science in Penguins
Penguins have been getting hands-on with science this week as part of their materials topic. The young investigators explored the concept of hardness by testing a variety of everyday materials to determine which were the most resistant to scratching. Using a nail, the children worked in...
