Messages from Manor

Dear Parents and Carers

Hopefully you will have received a Christmas design made by your child/ren tonight with a leaflet that explains what it is for. The children have been busy designing their Christmas card pictures that the PTA are organising for us. If you fancy having a tote bag, a calendar, cards etc with these designs on then read the instructions on the back of the design and the leaflet, complete it and return to school by next Wednesday 22nd October. Thank you.

This is another example of the extra value the PTA bring to school, taking the organisation of this sort of activity away from the school office and classroom staff but giving parents a fun opportunity and making some money for the school to do things we couldn't otherwise afford. The PTA AGM held this week saw the same committee members elected to carry on in their roles. We are very grateful to the committee who take on this voluntary work so brilliantly.

Parent Governor Vacancies

Following our successful Ofsted inspection earlier this year we have seen a few changes in the make up of our Local Governing Committee (LGC). Some governors saw it as a good time to step down from their roles and Jemma Harris took on the role of Chair of Governors. Jemma was a parent governor but we have converted her to a co-opted governor which means we now have two parent governor vacancies. We will shortly be advertising for any parents who would like to be elected to join our LGC.

The role of governor entails attending at least 6 meetings in the year, one each half term. There are papers to read before the meetings such as school policies, reports about school data and statistics, improvement plans etc. During the meetings governors challenge school leaders through raising questions and helping to steer the strategic direction of the school. Governors also need to be available to form any other committees when the need arises and they may need to attend governor visit days once or twice a year.

The role is vital to support the school and its leaders to deliver the best education for our children. If you feel you are able to contribute in this role at the heart of the school community, please do speak to Mr Robson for any further details. There will be nomination forms that can be completed at the school office

Summer Reading Challenge 3rd Place!

Before the summer we had a big push to get children started on the library service 'Summer Reading Challenge'. This was then down to you as parents to carry this on and complete the challenge of children reading 6 library books across the summer. Schools across the Tamworth area have been put into a league table and the top ten schools had their results published. We were excited to see that Manor had shot up to 3rd place with 17% of children completing the challenge! We were actually the only primary school in the top 5 with infant schools making up the other places. A huge thanks to all who made the effort to complete the challenge, adding another brick to the building of Manor as a 'reading school'.

For those who are keen to continue this momentum, the Mobile Library will be outside the church in Drayton Bassett on Tuesday 28th October during half term from about 10:30-11:30am.

Cross Country

All Key Stage 2 children have been given the opportunity to represent the school in the cross-country races held at Rawlett over the last few weeks. Those who took up the offer all represented the school brilliantly, whether that was by simply completing the course, or by competing with the best at the front of the race. We were proud of them all.

Of particular note were the Year 4 girls. All six came in the front half of the race and the first four counted as our team, which came second out of all the schools in Tamworth. The first four girls over the line received a silver medal. This was appropriate for Adaline H, who actually came second in the whole race! Adeline P was 10th and Imogen was 15th (despite a fall mid-race!). Ellie was one place ahead of Pippa and Heidi in 30th, 31st and 32nd out of about 60 in total.

In the Year 5 boys' race, Jenson told me his target was to beat his 8th place from the year before. He was 15th after the first lap but stormed through into 4th in the last kilometre before being pipped to the post in a three-way sprint finish to take, a still brilliant, 6th place (target achieved!). Maddox finished in the top half of the race and Bruno and Reuben kept each other company towards the back but ran almost the whole way to complete the race - more than I could do!

The Year 3 boys, Jacob, George, Grayson, Shivam and Dexter had their first long distance race and did really well, especially Grayson who came 8th overall, following in big brother's foot steps!

We had three Year 6 runners with Bailey being the best placed with a creditable 21st place. Arrietty and Caleb did brilliantly too.

We were proud of all those who showed our Manor values of Open-mindedness in 'giving it a go' and Resilience in never giving up.

Harvest Festival

Practice for Harvest Festival is going well ready for the last day of this half term on Friday 24th October in church. We will again be making a collection of dried/tinned/preserved food for the food bank. Please bring these donations in on the Friday. Parents will be welcome to join us in what is often a packed church for a 2pm start. PTA will be selling refreshments from about 1:30pm. Children will be released to parents after returning to school. Any help with taking the food to the food bank would be gratefully received.

Reception 2026

This is the time of year when parents are starting to look at schools before making a choice for Reception applications later in the term. The birth rate in the area has been quite low for some time now, and we could do with a few extra children joining us in September 2026. We have had a number of families looking round already but if you know of anyone wanting a friendly village school with high standards, do send them our way!

Is My Child Too Ill For School

This time of year there are always a few coughs and colds around. It is never an easy decision as to when is best for children to soldier on and not miss any learning by coming to school and when to stay away to avoid spreading infections and tuck up in bed to recover. The NHS provide a simple guide in the link below which will hopefully help:

After School Clubs

As we approach the end of this half-term, the after-school sports clubs will be changing again. The Leicester Tigers Rugby for Year 4/5/6 (as well as Owls lesson) will be ending at half-term, as will the zorbing club.

We will instead have an S.H. Active 'martial arts' club on a Tuesday open to all from Year 1 - Year 6 (starting the first week back) and a KS2 Multi-sports club on a Wednesday run by Mrs Sheridan (starting the second week back).

After Christmas, we are excited to have booked a new company to run a couple of clubs for us in the week. We have requested and been guaranteed the coaches will be former Team GB Olympic athletes! The coaches were both competing in the skeleton bobsleigh, having started at Tamworth athletics club. Their elite sports background and links to local clubs, combined with being great with children, bodes well. With the Winter Olympics starting in February, they have suggested curling as a possible club (still to be confirmed). They will be coming to do an 'inspiration' assembly and may bring some of their Team GB friends to some sessions after Christmas. More information nearer the time.
