Messages from Manor

Dear Parents and Carers

Staffing at Manor Primary has been amazingly stable for a long time now and long may that continue. We have a strong team of teachers, teaching assistants, office staff and other support staff who work well together and know the school routines and procedures as well as the children and their families. It is of course inevitable that there will be changes as time goes on. Last week we held interviews for the role of lunchtime supervisor as Mr Hounslow moved on to a full time job elsewhere. We thank him for his time at Manor and wish him well. We are delighted to say that Mrs Tracey Harrison has joined our Manor lunchtime team and has already started this week. We also have an advert out for a part-time teaching assistant role on Thursdays and Fridays to increase the capacity of our team to support those children with the greatest level of need, in turn freeing the teachers to concentrate on the whole class. We hope to be able to access further funding to support more teaching assistant hours later in the year.

Shortly we will have Birmingham City University trainee teachers in Swans and Owls up to the end of term. Along with the fabulous skilled team of volunteers we are able to call on, this brings extra energy and support for the established core team at Manor.

Thank You!

Last week there were two events organised and supported by PTA where parents generously contributed. The first was a sponsored run/walk in PE lessons for National Fitness Day. The children had fun and worked hard with plenty of red faces at the end. They all did their best, but I believe the furthest distance run was by Jenson, who managed over 30 laps of the field, so around 3 kilometres! The PTA made £180.49 from this event. Thank you!

The PTA also supported a MacMillan Coffee Morning at the Village Club last week. This raised a total of £251 for a great cause. Thank you to all the parents who went along to support it.

Cross Country

We are into cross-country season and this week was the turn of our Year 3's. The team was George, Jacob, Shivam, Dexter and Grayson. They all did their best and behaved sportingly, making Mrs Turner proud. Out of the 60+ runners, Grayson finished a very creditable 8th. Thank you to Mrs Turner for leading this for us.

Next week is the turn of Year 4 and 5 then Year 6 the week after that. This is open to anyone who fancies a go. The distances gradually increase with age from about 1km to 1.6km. Maybe a family training run at the weekend if you fancy?!

Last week the children at Manor wrote pen-pal letters or drawings for the children at Ankermoor Primary, a fellow Fierté school. These were delivered, and we are waiting in anticipation for the replies later in the term. This was an idea proposed by the children who came to a Trust Student Council meeting held at Manor last term. As a result schools have been paired up with similar sized schools and we hope this will bring the Fierte community closer together and create connections with children in different settings and between classes. It also gives a good incentive for children to write!

The next Trust Student Council meeting is next week at Manor where children will be representing each of the 10 schools and deciding on what actions they would like to see next.

Harvest Festival

Children are starting to learn their songs for the Harvest Festival on the last day of this half term on Friday 24th October in church. We will again be making a collection of dried/tinned/preserved food for the food bank. Parents will be welcome to join us in what is often a packed church for a 2pm start. Children will be released to parents after returning to school.

Reception 2026

This is the time of year when parents are starting to look at schools before making a choice for Reception applications later in the term. The birth rate in the area has been quite low for some time now, and we could do with a few extra children joining us in September 2026. We have had a number of families looking round already but if you know of anyone wanting a friendly village school with high standards, do send them our way!

Security Review

Safeguarding is our number one priority and part of that involves our site security. Ofsted were perfectly happy with this aspect of Manor but we are always looking to improve, and Fierté Trust have had a security review commissioned for all the Fierté schools. We have now received the report which makes a number of recommendations for us to consider. These range in cost and practicality (from closing gates to installing complex CCTV systems) and we are working through these suggestions, getting quotes etc. to see what we are able to put in place.

One simple suggestion was to close the double black gates at the front of school during the school day. We would make sure to keep them open during the drop off and pick up times to avoid congestion on the narrow pavements but during quiet times the pedestrian gate can be kept unlocked. This will help discourage anyone passing by from accessing the front of the school, especially if the pedestrian gate is pulled too but not locked, and it will prevent unwanted vehicle access down the school driveway.

We hope that this does not inconvenience anyone, and we would welcome feedback if there are any issues.

The security company researched the area and recorded crime among other indicators and considered our site to be in a safe place and very secure. These extra measures will be considered once we get the full costings to see what we can afford and what the priorities are.
