Dear Parents and Carers

A busy start to the year is about to get even busier! Next week we have a 2 day visit from two senior leaders in Fierté MAT. We have Mrs Harris who is headteacher at Violet Way Academy in Burton and Mr Hand who is the Trust Vice-CEO and former headteacher, coming to help us get a deeper understanding of what we are doing well and what we can do better. They will be joining Mr Robson in watching lessons, interviewing teachers, talking to children, scrutinising children's work and talking to parents. They will be on the playground on Wednesday morning when we open the gates (and possibly at other times) and would love to hear your thoughts, both positive and negative, to feed into the picture we will build of our school.

A report will be written and strengths of the school highlighted for other schools to come and see, and our next steps for improvement will be detailed with support from the Trust to help us achieve them.

The whole process is an added pressure for staff at the time because they care and want to show the best but they always say how helpful the feedback is afterwards and how fair and open Fierté are in the process. Nonetheless, I'm sure the teachers and teaching assistants would appreciate a kind word or two next week if you get the chance!

After School and lunchtime Clubs

The after school clubs are proving very popular this term with KS2 football and Mr Forman's KS1 Lego club. We also have different age groups getting organised lunchtime clubs with Miss Cole when the field is useable.

Mrs Armstrong is now looking to start a new KS2 Book Club, for Owls and Penguins, starting Monday 7th October at lunchtimes. The book will be 'The World Behind The Door - Greenwild' by Pari Thompson ( Waterstones winner for this year). Children will need to have their own copy of the book to join the club (please let us know in confidence if this is an issue for you).

Please don't get children to read this in advance. We want the children to have the excitement and anticipation before but to reveal the book's secrets as they read it together. More details to follow from Mrs Armstrong.

The Book Club will also be tasked with creating a reading trolley for use at playtimes. Mrs Armstrong would like to ask for donations of good quality picture books, clean cushions and small fleece type blankets. Thank you.

Reception Parents' Phonics Workshop

Mr Forman and Mrs Armstrong are planning to invite parents of Reception children to a Phonics Workshop at 9-9:30pm on Thursday 10th October. After dropping your children off there will be a presentation and chance to ask questions and chat about the way that we teach your children to read using phonics and how you may be able to support them at home. Do try and make time to pop along. If you can't make it then do let Mr Forman or Mrs Armstrong know and they will make sure you get a copy of any presentation and answer any questions.

Names in Clothing

We have a growing pile of lost property in school. The first thing we do when we get lost property is to check for names and return it to the owner. Of course names written in pen wash out after a few weeks and some are no longer readable. Please could we ask that parents check all items of clothing worn to school and renew any name labels that have fallen off or rewrite names in permanent marker. Thank you for helping us to help you.

Book Amnesty

As a school we have invested heavily in reading resources over the last few years with some excellent results in the children's learning. Unfortunately we have started to find that the sets of books that we send home for reading groups are not always coming back creating gaps that we need to fill. Many of these have not been returned from Robins and Swans parents last year. The biggest gaps are from phase 3 books that our current Year 1 children took home last year.

Please can we ask that parents have a good look at home, in bags ect., and return any school books they find.

We will need to charge parents for any lost books that our records show have not been returned. Thank you for your support in this.

Boot Donation Service

Tamworth Borough Council have recently opened a new 3G All Weather facility at Anker Valley Sports Complex. This will be used for a variety of activities including football, netball, multi-sports, hockey etc.

Due to the surface of the new facility, specific footwear has to be worn.

We appreciate that the cost of this footwear may become a barrier for some families and, with this in mind, we have set up a Boot Donation Service.  This will allow any children/teens wanting to use the facility to be able to borrow a pair of boots, taking the pressure off families who are struggling financially and preventing children/teens from missing out.

If you have any pre-loved boots that are no longer needed, with studs similar to those in the image below, please consider donating them. All sizes are welcomed!

Boots can be dropped to Anker Valley Sports Complex on Monday and Tuesday evenings between 5pm and 9pm, or alternatively please contact Sports-Pitches@tamworth.gov.uk

(Studs must be screw-in or moulded –  No metal studs.)

Thank you so much, your support is greatly appreciated 😊

Dinner Payments on Arbor

Please could parents regularly check for dinner bills on Arbor to avoid accruing any debt. The office will send reminders where necessary but would rather parents managed this themselves where possible. If you have any questions or issues with the system, Mrs Everett is always happy to help. Thank you.

Volunteers

We are looking for any volunteers who would like to be a regular part of our school team. There are always lots of jobs from preparing resources to hearing readers and more. If you have a bit of time you can spare on a regular basis we would love to hear from you. We have an application form available from the office and we will organise your DBS check etc. Then you will be ready to go. Many of our school staff started their careers with voluntary work in schools so who knows where it will lead!

Thank you to Mrs Robinson and Mrs Newson for the time and commitment they have given in training up to take a 30 minute Little Wandle Swans reading group three days a week. It makes a huge difference to this vital part of the children's education.

After School Collection

Please could we politely remind parents that after school collection should be by a named individual who is 16 or older unless agreed with the headteacher in advance. Obviously, this doesn't apply to the Year 5 and Year 6 children with parental permission to walk home. Thank you for your support in this.

Dance Champions

Well done to Amelia and Erin in Year 5 who have been working hard as part of a dance team that have won their way through 8 rounds of competition to win the chance to perform at Disneyland, Florida next summer. Good luck and well done to both girls for their amazing dedication to dance!
