Messages from Manor

Dear Parents and Carers

We like to think that Manor Primary is at the heart of the local community and there have been several examples of that recently. Of course, our own community has been enhanced by the work of the PTA, who help to bring people together through their activities and events, especially in the run-up to Easter. Since the break, the children have been involved in creating posters about their community in support of the Best Kept Village competition that Drayton Bassett is entering again. There is a clear pride and sense of ownership of the village that comes through in the children's work, often with themes about keeping it tidy and clean. The best posters from different age groups will be displayed around the village and sent off for judging.

On Tuesday I was asked to present a report about the last year at Manor to the Parish Council AGM. This was held in the WI Hall with about 40 local residents packed in. There was a real warmth and appreciation of the school from the people there and, again, there was that sense of a shared ownership of a valued institution that brings life and energy to the village. A very wholesome experience.

We also like to give the children experiences and opportunities outside of school in the wider local community, and competing against other schools across Tamworth is one way they can do this. Our three Swimming Gala finalists supported by Mrs Cowell were an absolute credit to the school this week and each of them swam brilliantly. Phoebe K came 5th in her race, Josh C was third in his and Rose managed to win a fabulous trophy, coming first in the Y4 girls breaststroke. Reaching the finals has inspired her to join the Tamworth Swimming Club so look out for her in the Olympics in about 10 years time! Equally as important was the attitude and behaviour the children displayed in competing so hard, being aspirational, but being sporting and well mannered with it. Well done team Manor!

Mrs Perry

You may have heard on the grapevine, rumours that Mrs Perry is leaving us. Unfortunately this is true and her last day will be next Friday 26th. Mrs Perry came to us as Miss Hughes nearly 10 years ago and has been an integral part of our Early Years team ever since and has been a jolly and welcoming face for the children every morning. She has touched the lives of many children at Manor and will be missed by all.

Mrs Perry's husband has retired and Mrs Perry fancies spending a bit more time at home (or abroad!) in the coming years. We wish her all the very best of good health and happiness and insist that she comes back and visits regularly. (She has said she is available for helping on any school trips!)

We are currently advertising the 15 hour TA role. Do check out our advert or pass it on to anyone who you think would be interested on the following link:

Lunchtime Supervisor role

We have had a number of applications for the role of teaching assistant above, but very few for the 5 hour lunchtime supervisor role left by Mrs Cooper. The pay for both roles is actually the same grade and the two roles could easily be combined if someone was interested in more hours with us. We could also consider applications on a job share basis if someone was able to do a few days a week. If you or someone you know would be interested in looking after our fabulous children and joining our lunchtime team then the details are in the following link:

Writing Workshop for Parents

Hopefully you will have received a message to invite you to join us for a writing workshop next Tuesday 16th from 9-10am. Parents will start off in the classroom joining the children for a writing lesson before moving up to the hall to look at a bit of the theory behind what they have seen and look at ways that parents might be able to support their children at home.

From 10-10:30am Mrs Armstrong will spend some time with Reception parents looking at the next steps in their children's phonics and early reading journey through school.

We hope to see as many of you as can make it.

Magazines and Comics Please

We are working hard to develop the love of reading across school and have found a particular enthusiasm for magazines and comics recently in our Key Stage 2 children particularly. If you have any appropriate magazines or comics that have been read and are no longer needed then our children in all classes would love to take them off your hands for their moments of quiet reading time in school. Please send any donations in to your class teacher. Thank you!

Labelling Uniform

Polite reminder please to make sure that all articles of uniform are labelled with names. As the weather warms up children start to discard clothing at different times and places around the school and it is impossible to return unlabelled clothing to its owner. Our lost property boxes are starting to overflow and it must cost parents a penny or two to replace lost clothing. Thank you for your support.

SATS

As we head towards May the exam season is quickly approaching. Year 6 are busy revising and getting lots of exam practice and are working hard on their revision books at home. Year 2 will be doing the end of KS1 SATS tests at the end of May but this is the first year they have been made optional and will not be published and used by the DfE. We have decided to go ahead with the tests so we can use the information to find gaps and inform our own planning as well as giving us an internal measure of where we are against other schools in our Trust and nationally. The Year 2 children will hardly notice that they are doing these as they will just be part of their everyday learning. If you have any questions or concerns about these tests, please do speak to Mr Robson or the class teachers.

Parent Survey

Thank you to all those who completed the latest parent survey just before Easter. We had 33 returns from about 50 families in school. This was a Trust wide survey and we came out in a positive light overall when compared to the Trust as a whole and the Trust came out positively compared to schools nationally. All questions had an overall positive response but the lower scoring areas are where we will focus our energy and thoughts. The results will be shared with staff, especially the many lovely comments about our staff, and we will look at any areas we can adjust and improve before feeding back to parents in the near future.

Safeguarding

Staffordshire's Education Safeguarding team are continuing a focus on their priority area in fighting Child Sexual Abuse. Too often they find that they are relying on disclosures from children who are victims and they want to push the agenda of prevention. Part of this is getting information out to parents to help them safeguard their children. They recommend the following links that are well worth a look:

Swans head back to school!
Last week Swans class visited The Black Country Living Museum to support them with their 'Schools in the past' History topic. It was a brilliant, educational day out that all the children thoroughly enjoyed. The pupils went back through time to see what life was like across a range of eras a...
