History - let's play the game!

Owls got creative in a recent History lesson about the ancient Maya civilisation.

As part of our learning about the ancient Maya civilisation, Owls worked co-operatively to play a board game that enhanced the learning they were undertaking about the Maya. The game had a particular focus on the importance of the Ceiba tree (the important Tree of Life in Maya mythology) to the Maya. The children learnt about the legend of the Maya god, Kukulkan. Kukulkan took on the form of a colourful bird and came to share the importance of the beans with the Maya people. The Maya people were initially unsure what to do with the beans, but the goddess Ixchel visited the people in a dream to explain how to use them. The game had a variety of rules that the children had to work co-operatively to understand and then use. Good teamwork all round, Owls!
