Robins Class Take Flight in the RSPB Big Schools’ Birdwatch

This week, Robins Class have been soaring with excitement as we took part in the RSPB Big Schools’ Birdwatch, a nationwide project that invites pupils across the UK to observe and record the birds visiting their school grounds.
As part of our Understanding the World learning, Robins have been exploring how to care for animals in winter—especially birds. We’ve been incredibly busy with a whole host of hands‑on, bird‑themed activities:
- Making fat balls and bird cakes with Mrs Humus to help our local birds keep their energy up during the cold months.
- Creating “bird porridge” in our mud kitchen—an imaginative (and very messy!) way to explore what birds need to eat.
- Designing our own birds and crafting our very own bird‑watching binoculars, putting our creativity skills to the test.
- Writing our own “All About Birds” booklets, showing what knowledgeable ornithologists we are becoming.
- And many, many more exciting bird‑related challenges throughout the week
During our official count, we spotted:
- 3 robins
- 3 pigeons
- 1 long‑tailed tit
- 2 blue tits
- 1 great tit
- 1 chaffinch
What a wonderful week it has been for Robins Class! Through creativity, outdoor exploration, and hands‑on activities, the children have deepened their understanding of the natural world and learned how small actions - like feeding birds - can make a big difference. We are incredibly proud of their enthusiasm, teamwork, and curiosity.
Well done, Robins—what brilliant birdwatchers you are! 🐦🌿
