Planting for the Future

Owls went to Edden's Wood to plant a range of trees and hedgerows the school recently received from the Woodland Trust.
Recently, Owls class made their way down to Edden's Wood to plant a collection of trees and hedgerow saplings that were given to us by the Woodland Trust. It was a decidedly chilly November afternoon, but the sky was clear. Geared up with suitable hats, scarves, gloves, and wellies, the children made their way across the school playing field down to the gate that opens onto the nearby field. We walked carefully around the edge of the field to ensure we didn't damage the crops that had recently been planted. Once in the woods, the children gathered together the equipment they needed to start planting the hedgerows and trees. They used a method called slit planting where the spade was pushed into the ground and pushed backwards and forwards to make a slit that the sapling could be planted into. Once this was done, a cane was added with a plastic spiral to ensure that the plant would grow straight up – and not be eaten by any of the local inhabitants! We had a great time doing this and managed to stay warm with all the hard work. We would also like to say a big thank you to Mr Torrance for supporting us not only with his time but with some of the resources he brought with him for us to use – a big thank you from all of us. Well done Owls – you have made a great improvement to our local environment.
