Robins Class Enrichment: A Sweet Celebration of Birthdays!

October is officially birthday bonanza month in Robins Class, and we’re not just talking about party hats and balloons. With so many birthdays to celebrate, our enrichment topic on Celebrations naturally led us to focus on the most universally loved tradition: birthdays!
This Tuesday, our classroom transformed into a mini bakery thanks to the wonderful Mrs Hemus, who joined us to lead a cupcake extravaganza. Armed with mixing bowls, spatulas, and a whole lot of enthusiasm, our EYFS children worked in small teams to bake, decorate, and (yes, taste-test!) their very own birthday cupcakes.
The children practised a whole host of key skills during this activity, including:
- Fine motor development: stirring, spooning, and sprinkling with precision
- Maths: measuring ingredients and counting cupcake cases
- Communication and language: discussing flavours, colours, and sharing ideas
- Teamwork and cooperation: working in groups, taking turns, and helping one another
- Creative expression: designing their own cupcake decorations with buttercream, sprinkles, and chocolate tarts (yes, chocolate tarts — we don’t mess around!)
Mrs Hemus brought in a delightful book filled with imaginative children’s birthday cakes. So, whilst waiting for their cakes to bake, our young bakers pored over the pages, pointing out their favourites and dreaming up what they might request for their next birthday. From penguin cakes to rainbow towers, the ideas were as colourful as the icing!
After the decorating (and a few inevitable sticky fingers), some children took the leftover cupcakes around school, presenting them in little packets to teachers as a surprise treat. The smiles were priceless and the cakes didn’t last long!
We owe a huge thank you to Mrs Hemus for her love, patience, and boundless energy. Her support made the day truly special, and we’re already counting down to next Tuesday. If joy could be baked into a cupcake, Robins Class nailed the recipe.
