Supporting Early Reading: Our Little Wandle Parent Workshop

This week, we were delighted to welcome parents and carers of our new Reception children to a special workshop all about Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised and how we teach early reading at school.

The session was designed to give families a clear understanding of how phonics is taught, how children learn to read, and how parents can support this vital journey at home. It was wonderful to see so many of you there, eager to learn and get involved!

During the workshop, we explored:

  • What phonics is and why it’s such an important part of learning to read.
  • How the Little Wandle programme is structured and how it progresses throughout the year.
  • The pronunciation of pure sounds and how blending helps children read words.
  • How we use reading practice books in school that are carefully matched to each child’s phonics knowledge.
  • Tips for reading at home, including how to make it fun, engaging, and part of your daily routine.

We also shared some useful resources, including videos and guides from the Little Wandle website, to help parents feel confident when supporting their child’s reading at home.

Learning to read is one of the most important skills your child will ever learn. It opens the door to every other area of learning and builds confidence, curiosity, and a love of books. By working together we can give every child the best possible start.

A huge thank you to all the parents who attended. Your enthusiasm and support make a real difference. For future reference, we will share the presentation slides and helpful links on our school website soon.

If you have any questions or would like further support, please visit the parent section of the Little Wandle website or speak to Mrs Armstrong.
