Robins Take Flight Into Spring!

Bloom, Grow, Celebrate – A Wonderful Start to Our New Topic.
The children in Robins Class (Nursery and Reception) have had a truly exciting start to their new Spring unit, Bloom, Grow, Celebrate! A Springtime Adventure. Over the past two weeks, our youngest learners have thrown themselves into discovering the magic of the changing seasons and the wonders of the natural world.
We began by learning about seasonal changes, heading out around the school grounds to spot the first signs of Spring. The children were thrilled to find daffodils, daisies, crocuses, tree buds and even nests high in the branches. Their curiosity and enthusiasm filled the walk with excitement and chatter.
Back in the classroom, the children learned about how plants grow and what they need to survive, making brilliant connections between what they observed outside and how gardeners care for plants.
Our new role‑play areas, a Garden Centre and a Potting Shed, have been buzzing with activity. The children have loved:
- Planting pretend and real seeds
- Writing signs, labels and shopping lists
- Painting pictures of flowers and plants
- Exploring tools, pots and gardening equipment
There has been no shortage of imagination as they step into the role of young horticulturists or as the scientists would say, budding botanists!
A highlight of the fortnight was discovering a real bird’s nest tucked inside one of our bike helmets - a very unexpected home! The children used their inference skills to think about which bird might have built it. Then, to everyone’s delight, we arrived at school this week to find three tiny eggs inside.
Predictions about what they might become ranged from the wonderfully sensible to the wildly imaginative - everything from hummingbirds to ostriches! This has sparked rich conversations and observational drawings.
On Tuesday, we were delighted to welcome Mrs Hemus, who came armed with a fantastic selection of seeds. The children planted:
- Sunflowers
- Runner beans
- Lettuce
- A variety of flowers
A huge thank you to all families for the generous donations of seeds, pots, soil and tools. These gifts have truly helped bring our classroom to life and inspired the next generation of young botanists.
We have kept our hands busy with a range of Spring-themed learning, including:
- Planting seeds
- Creating seed‑mosaic pictures
- Painting watercolour flowers
- A Spring nature walk
- Observing our seed potatoes, which are now sprouting and ready for planting
Every day brings new discoveries and plenty of muddy hands!
There is still so much more to come this term. We are especially excited about our upcoming trip to Lower Drayton Farm, where the children will learn about Spring on the farm and explore how animals and plants grow. As we move closer to Easter, we will also be learning about the traditions and celebrations that take place at this time of year.
With such a fantastic and energetic start to the term, we know that by the time half‑term arrives, both children and adults will have well and truly earned their rest!
