A Taste of Autumn: Cooking and Nutrition in Action

This term, our children have been busy exploring the world of fruits and vegetables in our Design Technology: Cooking and Nutrition unit. The focus was on understanding the differences between fruits and vegetables using our senses: taste, texture, smell, and even appearance.
To spark their curiosity, the class listened to the delightful story “The Best Pumpkin Soup”. Together, they discussed the key ingredients used by the characters and then worked collaboratively to develop their very own class vegetable soup recipe.
Before cooking, the children sampled a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, discovering new flavours and textures along the way. They also learned essential kitchen skills, including how to use sharp tools safely, cut food correctly, and the importance of handwashing and hygiene when preparing meals.
The highlight of the unit was making a delicious Autumn vegetable soup. Each child played a role in chopping, stirring, and combining ingredients to create a warming dish perfect for the season. And of course, the best part was tasting the soup they had worked so hard to prepare!
This activity wasn’t just about cooking; it was about teamwork, healthy eating, and building confidence in practical life skills. The children left the classroom not only with full tummies but also with a deeper understanding of nutrition and food safety.
Well done to all our budding chefs for their enthusiasm and creativity!
